Onions
Harvest and availability:
Onions are harvested once per year in the UK during autumn. Typically, the crop is harvested in August/September and stored with UK supply lasting until June/July. For onions there is usually an import period where UK supply has been exhausted and fresh produce suppliers like ourselves look towards Spain and Holland to meet the demands of the British consumer.

Interesting facts:
- The cultivation of onions started over 5000 years ago in Asia. They quickly became a popular crop to cultivate because of their ability to be stored through winter.
- Onions are a very healthy food to eat. They are naturally low in sugar, fat and provide the body with a wide variety of vitamins and nutrients. However, onions are toxic to cats and dogs due to the presence of a compound called thiosulphate which can cause haemolytic anemia in our furry friends.
- Onions are well known to harbour antiseptic properties. It is well known that onions have been used to treat wounds during wartime.
